What You Get
Qualifications & Life Skills
Functional maths is different to GCSE Maths as it focuses on learning skills that can be transferred into everyday situations. It is not taught through a strict curriculum and you learn subjects in functional maths that you will need to use in the future. We have Monday morning and Monday afternoon sessions for Functional Maths.
Functional English is based around reading, writing, speaking and listening. It is focused on skills that are transferable for use in college or employment in the future. All the areas that you will cover will help you improve vital communication skills needed for adult life. We have Monday morning and Monday afternoon sessions for Functional English.
Employability & Personal Development
Our course in employability and personal development is all about helping you gain the skills to help you apply for jobs or colleges. It has units based on CV writing, job searches and interview skills. The personal development side of the course includes units on team work and communication skills. We have one-to-one sessions with our learners all day Tuesday, on Wednesday mornings and all day Thursday.
What Our One-To-One Sessions Can Include
Our one-to-one sessions with our learners can vary and can be adapted to the individual. So one session can include confidence building, support with writing a CV, guidance about job applications, attending appointments, developing fitness and careers advice.
Wednesday Afternoon Group Sessions
Wednesday afternoons at Futureworks NY are when our group sessions take place. Activities and tasks can vary, including art and crafts, life skills, searching for jobs, employability, various team-building games and guest speakers. These sessions have a number of aims including building confidence, self-esteem, interactional skills and can lead to learners discovering new hobbies and interests, building friendships and increasing confidence. Skills are also gained along the way.
Feel Good Fridays
Fridays offer a chance for learners to relax after a week of activities. The aim is to keep Fridays fun, so the feel good sessions have included trips to the bowling centre, an escape room, a walk along the seafront (with some fish and chips as well!), a visit to the local Sealife Sanctuary, a cinema trip, a walk around Peasholm Park, a Go Ape session, rock climbing, go karting, a trip to a museum, a day out in historic York, games sessions, a lunch at a local cafe or even a walk along the Cinder Track. The aim is to build upon skills developed during the week in a fun, interactional way.
Other possible qualification opportunities sometimes include basic First Aid and Sign Language. Qualifications and skills acquired can lead to future employability for our learners.
We have some great Learner Stories to share and we’ll update these soon.
